Laryngology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the larynx or 'voice box'. The term has come to represent a branch of medicine concerned with benign conditions affecting the voice, swallowing and the upper airway. Laryngologists are qualified medical doctors who have completed training in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery (Otolaryngology) and then developed a special interest in laryngology. They work closely with Speech and Language Therapists and other healthcare professionals in teams to diagnose and treat laryngology disorders.

The National Laryngology Research Network was established to encourage communication and coordination between academic centres involved in benign laryngology research across the United Kingdom. The network brings together pioneering academics, laryngology clinicians, patients and the public to find new ways to advance our knowlege of laryngology. The Network will also promote efforts to enhance NHS research infrastructure for laryngology and seek to attract major funding for new projects. In the future we hope to establish a number of national audits encourage national data collection to monitor outcomes.
